I'm from Leslie, Michigan and politics have always interested me -- my first political memory is staying up late on Election Night 2000 watching the results come in. My parents have always been politically aware, though not necessarily involved, and so I continued to be interested through the Bush '04, Devos for MI Gov '06, McCain '08, and then the Rick Snyder 2010 campaigns...
Before the 2012 election, I joined Generation Joshua and that inspired me to get really involved. When my parents decided to support Rick Santorum, that was when I first got really involved, and the process captured my attention even more during that time. Throughout 2012 I stayed involved, first with Rick Santorum's campaign and then with the fight against the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and then as an intern with the Michigan GOP in the months leading up to the election.
I've been a Generation Joshua member for roughly four years, and actively involved for about three years. I received the Future of America Leadership award which is awarded annually to a Generation Joshua member who exhibits leadership skills in advancing faith, family, and freedom in their community and their government. I started the Freedom's Defenders because I wanted to impact the 2012 elections, by encouraging people to get involved with campaigns for conservative candidates. After brainstorming some ideas with some GenJ friends in September 2012, Freedom's Defenders was born on October 2012. Initially we just encouraged people to volunteer for conservative candidates, but soon expanded and included more info and legislative advocacy as well.
If I could share one thing with young people today it would be that you may be just one person, but you represent a generation -- a generation that will, Lord-willing, inherit the America of tomorrow. You can make a difference today in what that America will look like, whether it be by writing a letter to the editor or knocking on doors supporting a conservative candidate. You can make a difference -- and right now is an excellent time to get started!"
